Future Travel

Future Travel Destinations

So far I have a small list of places that I have researched to see in the future.  However, the list seems to be slowly growing and I can’t check places off as quickly as I add them.  For now, this is what I’d like to see while I’m in Japan.

  • Okinawa
  • Hokkaido(specifically the snow festival)
  • Iga Ninja Museum
  • Kamikochi
  • Hemji Castle
  • Matsumoto Castle
  • Nikko
  • Osaka (again)
  • Takayama (again)
  • Kyoto (again and again and again)
  • Gujo Hachiman
  • Yakushima(site of possibly the oldest living tree in the world)
  • Mt Fuji
  • Hiroshima
  • Kyushu
  • Thailand (in two weeks!!!)

Some will come sooner than others, but I will hopefully see everything this year in addition to whatever I find later.

  1. Just came across your blog. Looks great! My boyfriend and i are planning a 2 year backpacking trip through Europe and Asia to start in the fall. We are planning on starting in Japan and are thinking of spending 2 weeks there – would love to spend a whole month but seems to be out of the backpacker budget range : / Question for you since you’ve been living there a while – any recommendations for must visit cities/destination or maybe how to split the time up between cities? Any advice would be highly appreciated! Thanks!

    • If you are only spending 2 weeks then I would say the must see cities are Tokyo and Kyoto. Tokyo is great because it is unlike any other city on the planet. The skyscrapers and constant bustle is comparative to New York, but again it has it’s own unique characteristics. Kyoto is the old capital of Japan and was set as off limits during the bombings of WWII in order to respect and preserve the ancient culture of Japan. There are countless temples, shrines, and sights that will amaze you. You could easily spend a week in each city, but if you’re looking for more, Osaka is close to Kyoto and is the second most populated city in Japan. I have yet to go there, but everyone says it is much different from Tokyo and definitely worth the trip.
There are also smaller cities in the area such as Takayama that will not take as much time (maybe 2 days), but the experience and scenery of the area is amazing. Takayama is preserved as an older village with rivers and mountains surrounding the area. The people are extremely courteous and helpful which is a great addition when you’re in a foreign country. Here are some links, you can find plenty of information about sights in Japan from here with reviews from other travelers.

Also, if you go to Tokyo then you should research Nikko. It’s about an hour north of Tokyo by train and contains some of the richest cultural shrines and the tomb of Ieyasu Tokugawa, who began the Tokugawa era which lasted for over 250 years! It is said that his tomb was set in the north in order to protect against any demons that may try to enter (demons were thought to always come from the north).

      I hope this helps!

  2. Thank you so much for the thorough reply! I truly appreciate it. Taking into account what you mentioned and doing some more research I’m thinking of including these places in my itinerary:
Tokyo with day trip to Nikko
Kyoto with day trip to Nara
Takayama (see Shirakawego on the way)
Hiroshima (with a ferry ride to Miyajima)
    Osaka (possibly visit Mount Koya)

I don’t want to continue badgering you with questions and advice so don’t feel obligated to respond but if you have any more words of advice based on the list I just posted please feel free to let me know!

    Thanks again!

  3. The castle freak in me is very curious! What and where is Hemji Castle? Never heard of it! 🙂

Oh yes, Gujo is still on my list as well! I hope I can go there this year.

Good luck with achieving your goals! 🙂

    • I believe it’s in Aichi Prefecture, but I’d have to double check. I had a tour book that I flipped through and circled the things I wanted to see, but it is easier to post here to remember the places I want to go. lol

      Good luck with yours too!
